We are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so give our office a call as soon as possible so that we can help. The most common emergency issues that patients encounter are loose and poking wires, which can cause pain and discomfort if not resolved straightaway. Remember to hold on to any part of your appliance that may have fallen off or broken and bring it with you to your appointment. Some problems can be resolved over the phone — we are always happy to talk you through any orthodontic issues.
If getting to the office quickly is not possible, there are a few things you can do to resolve the problem yourself temporarily. If you have a wire or bracket that is poking the inside of your mouth, you can place wax over the broken piece to alleviate the discomfort until you can see us. If you have a loose wire, you can use a pair of clean tweezers or needle nose pliers to guide the wire into its bracket. If that is not possible, a pencil eraser is a handy way to push the wire into a less uncomfortable position temporarily.
If you stick to the rules we provide, are mindful of problem foods, and protect your mouth with a mouthguard during sports, you probably won’t have any orthodontic emergencies during treatment. It’s always a bit of extra insurance to pay close attention to your treatment plan so that you can let us know at your next appointment if you have identified any issues. Regular brushing and flossing is also a good way to keep tabs on your oral health.
